Abstract
Shiheung-Geon bordeers with Seoul on the north, with Kwangjoo-Goon on the east, with Hwasung-Goon on the south, with Yellow sea on the fest and with Boochun-Goon on the south west. This Goon contains seven Myuns, Anyang, Kwachun, Euiwang, Suh, Nam, Sooam and Koonja-Myun.
Yongin-Goon is located in the middle part of southern Kyunggi-Do and borders with Kwangjoo-Goon on the north, with Ihchun-Goon on the east, with Ansung-Goon on the south and with Hwasung-Goon on the west. Yongin-Goon is relativeiy mountainous and contains eleven Myuns such as Sooji, Kiheung, Koosung, Pokok, Mohyun, Yongin, Naesa, Namsa, Ihdong, Wonsam ,and Woisa-Myun. Each Myun has about 10,000-15,000 populatlon and has 5to 10 Ris except for Yongin-Myun.
This stiudy was directed to these Goons as a part of the program of studying directly making a trip to each Mun in every Goon in Kyunggi-Do as finding out the districts which have the crayfish and crabshaving Paragoninlus metacercaria is urgent because many children in rura1 areas eat raw and slightly roasted crayfish juice for the treatment of measles producing many public health problems. One primaryschool from each Myun was selected and pupils inolder age groups were tested for this study being asked about their custom of eating raw and made quately roasted crayfish and crabs and their environ-mental situations regarding drinking water and testingthem with Paragonimus and Clonorchis antigen . Thecrayfish caught from these Myuns were examined for Paragoninlus metacercaria.
The children who ate raw crayfish in Shiheung-Goon were ranged from none in Kwachun, Koonja Myuns to 10.1% in Euiwang-Myun and in Young in-Goon were ranged from 1.9% in Naesam-Myun to 37.5% in Ihdong-Myun Many. Many male children and few female
children in most of the Myuns in these Goons ate raw crayfish. The children rho ate Poorly roasted crayfish in Shiheung-Goon were ranged from 8.7% in Koonja-Myun to 90.6% in Euiwang-Myun and the incidence is generally low in the western numountaineous areas and high in the eastern mountainous part of the Goon. Those who ate poorly roasted crayfish in Yongin-Goon were ranged from 75.6% in Namsa-Myun to 100.0% in Yougin-Myun. The children who ate soysouce soaked crabs in Shiheung-Goonwere ranged from 8.7% in Euiwang-Myun to 90.7%in Sooam-Myun and those who ate poorly roasted crabs in Shiheung-Goon were ranged from 1.3% in Euiwang-Myun to 37.1% in Sooam-Myun. Crabs appear to be abundant in the western part of Shiheung-Goon and appear to be rare in the eastern part of the Goon and in Yongin-Goon.
In environmental situations, those who drink the water of streams, and from shallow wells have possibility of acquiring Paragonimus metacercaria from the water directly. Those children who drank such water in Shiheung Goon were ranged from 5.6%in Nam-Myun to 32.9% in Sooam-Myun and inYongin-Goon from 4.7% in Namsa-Myun to 23.8%in Mohyun-Myun. The positive rate will paragonimus skin test in Shiheung-Goon were ranged from0% in Anyang, Sooam-Myuns to 4.5% in Nam Myun and could not demonstrate even one Pargonimus metacercaria from the crayfish caught from the Goon. The positive rate in Yongin-Goon with Paragonimus skin test were ranged from 0% in Naesa,Namsa, Ihdong, Wollsam-Myuns which are located in the southern part of the Goon to 10.9% in Yongin Myun. The infestation rate of crayfish with Paragonimus metacercaria was found to be as follow : 0.8% in Dongchun-Ri, Sooji-Myun, 0.7% in Shinwon-Ri Pokok-Myun and 0.8% in both Woonhak-Ri and HoRi, Yongin-Goon. Crabs are not likely to be a second intermediate host of Paragonimiasis in these Goons
The custom of taking raw crayfish juice for the treatment of measles is also prevalent in these Goons which may give many harmful effects to growing children. I wish the public health authorities and the school authorities in these Goons would strive to eradicate this bad custom.
